As you may know, there is a recently proposed settlement by the National Association of
REALTORS® (NAR). Here are several clarifying points:
- Compass is fully prepared to adopt and adapt the changes laid out as part of the settlement,
as many have already been put in place. We see these updates as a positive for our clients and the brokerage community, as they provide additional transparency and clarity. - The settlement does not impose restrictions on the commission percentages clients negotiate with CompassAgents or prohibit brokerages and their agents from agreeing to any agreed-upon commission percentage with clients.
- Sellers retain the discretion to set compensation offers to buyer’s agents, and the settlement does not prohibit the ability to do so.
- Brokerage commissions have always been negotiable and are not set by law. Limited service, and reduced fee models have always been available for consumers seeking alternatives.
- Commissions have always been and will continue to be the subject of a transparent conversation with our clients. We have always encouraged a healthy dialogue around compensation for real estate services and will continue to do so.
The results of this settlement will undoubtedly change the residential real estate industry as we know
it. Our hope is that it will provide an opportunity to further professionalize the industry across the country and elevate Realtors® to standards we and our colleagues have always held dear.
